To keep you and your family warm you can spend the money and invest in a gas or electric heater, or you can save your pennies and purchase a silk doona.
A silk doona will not only balance the temperature in your bedding, it will keep it there too, without using any electricity.
What Are Silk Doonas?
Silk doonas are one of the must-have sleeping accessories. They’re also known as silk quilts or blankets. During the year, we are left exposed to nature’s seasons (spring, summer, winter, autumn) and its temperature changes.
They are lightweight covers (which look like luxurious wraps) that you can place over you to keep warm in winter and cool in summer.
A bonus feature is that they’ll help keep you comfortable anywhere, home or travelling. However, the main purpose is to keep you restful and help to keep it that way.
How Do Silk Doonas Work?
Doonas trap heat, that you naturally gain from your body, in your bedding.
When the day is hot and the air is warm, this contributes to your bedding getting warmer. Unfortunately, at night when it gets cooler outside, all that heat that your home gained during the day slowly escapes into night time air. They stop that heat from escaping your bed where you sleep at night or from loosing your body heat on cold rainy days.
How And When To Use Your Silk Doona
The doona needs to be placed on you, no matter which way up. Since the doona has strands of silk in it, it literally floats like air (see image above).
You want your doona slightly hanging over the sides of your bed. If the doona you have is too small, consider a larger size so that it fits snugly on the bed.
Obviously, the best time to use your doona is when you are in the bed. So, a good time would actually be at night. I know it sounds a little corny, but the truth is your body loses heat at night when it’s cooler out in the room, home and outside.
It will actually help keep the heat in your bed that makes you feel comfy.
Keep in mind that when you use one, you can share with your partner. This could heat up the doona and make it hot in bed. FEEL AGAIN! In fact, quite the contrary. The doona adjusts to your body temperature and to that of your partner. If you are a hot body, it turns down the heat and if you are a cool cat, the doona turns up the heat.
The Benefits of a Silk Doona
One benefit to having a silk doona is the price.
Silk doonas are a very inexpensive way to control the temperature in your bed. You can pick up a doona here at our Mitey Fresh Online store for as cosy as $190, depending on the size of your bed.
Another benefit is they are light and easy to take on and off your bed.
If you have a larger queen or king, you may want to invest some time in leaving your bed unmade to make this process even easier.
Some beds have a larger shape, like a super king or a thicker mattress. If you have an odd shaped bed, you might like to check out our super king quilts. However, you can always get a doona that will fit the length and width of your mattress and a little extra.
Bonus! Not many people are aware of this, and I want you to be part of this journey, silk is like tensile steel! And you know what tensile steel is like, it lasts forever.
- Use Two Covers To Make Comfort Even Easier
If your bed is really big like a queen or king and you don’t want to manoeuvre a larger sized doona, you can purchase 2 single doonas so that it’s easier to get on and off your bed. Instead of having a really giant size, that can sometimes be difficult to deal with.
We spend nearly one third of our day in bed! Reduce your exposure to house dust mites and their allergens with silk doonas. Dust mites will NEVER live in silk! Provides asthma and allergy relief by stopping the continual night time exposure to dust mite allergens while you sleep. Order Now.
- Use a Doona Even If You Have an Electric Blanket
If you have an electric blanket in your bed, using a doona is a great way to keep your utility costs down. It allows you to maintain the heat you initially created in your bed for a long time.
Maybe you’ve been putting off buying a silk doona or you never thought of buying one, either way, you need to change your thinking this year. If you don’t already have a silk doona or a microfiber blanket, this is the year to invest!
There are several reasons you should have a silk doona. The first one is the obvious one. However, these three reasons why you should buy a silk doona should convince you to pick one up today.

1. Silk Doonas Evenly Heat and Cool Your Bed
This is a no brainer, but the truth is by putting a silk doona on your bed every night, you can even the temperature of your bed to a comfortable level for both you and your partner, independebt from how much warmth your room gets.
2. Silk Doonas Save Energy
If you have an electric blanket, then you should ABSOLUTELY own a silk doona. Using a silk doona keeps the heat in your bed just like a curtain does for your window in your home. The longer you can keep the heat you generate from your bed, the less likely you’ll have to run your electric blanket. That will save on electric and magnetics big time!
3. Silk Doonas Keep Your Bed Clean
A doona is a doona. That means, a silk doona acts as a dust mite blocker for your bed. The curtain for your window in the home doesn’t just help to hold heat in, it helps to keep dust and debris out. So, you’ll clean your bedding less by using a silk doona, not only stops dust mites, it repels dust.
What About Microfiber Blankets?
If you’re one of the many people who don’t own a silk doona and hate putting on and removing the doona from your bed, you can opt for a microfiber blanket. However, there are some downsides, including the fact that a microfiber blanket will not help keep dust out of your bedding and reduce washing.
Their only job is to reduce heat evaporation, which will keep you warmer longer, like a sheer curtain.
Sumptuously soft microfiber blankets will wrap you in a layer of lightweight warmth that’s so comfy and toasty! Machine washable, easy care drying and hypo-allergenic properties, making it perfect for both domestic and commercial use. Order Now.
How to Care For Your Silk Doona All Year Round
Using a silk doona is a cost-effective, long-term solution to all your sleeping and relaxing requirements, but as with any product, there are a few drawbacks to using silk doona. For example, getting it to stay fresh through the ups and downs of our four seasons.
There are ways to protect the freshness your silk doona provides with little to no hassle or cost. Here are my top tips for more effective and long-lasting doona freshness by reducing exertion:
1. Create a Cover
The season decides the rate of warmth in bed which, in turn, decides to add an extra doona and / or a microfibre blanket.
If its winter, the temperature inside the home may drop considerably during the night and the outside temp will be relatively lower. As the temperature drops, the air outside the room is moved, allowing cool air to replace the warmer inside, and vice versa. Yes, it enters your room, and yes it cools the warm air around it. Likewise, warmer air moves out into the cold.
I suppose you could say it is seeking equilibrium. Considering the only part of your body left uncovered, your body heat is lost and you feel cold, reducing this loss will help to keep the heat in your bed.
Some simple ways to create a warmer bed for you could be:
- Adding an extra blanket on top.
- Placing microfibre like a sleeping bag in kids’ beds.
- Placing microfibre blanket on top of the bottom sheet.
- Adding an extra microfibre blanket between you and the top sheet.
2. Reduce Washing Time
Taking doona outside exposes the surface area of your doona to be sunbathed and open to airing. Features such as repels dust and dust mites naturally or soft soap wash may freshen up to twice as much.
Reduce the length of time cleaning. If you’re to enjoy the luxuriousness of your doona, cover with a decorative doona cover at all other times.
The Last Air Quality Tip …
My guide explains how to set up the perfect room with particular attention to air quality so that you never have to worry about it again.
As a Building Biologist, I have acquired knowledge of adverse health effects and recommend effective strategies to reduce occupants’ exposure by eliminating and controlling as many sources of pollutants and hazards as possible.
Where to next?
I encourage you to have conversations about Silk Doonas and how to keep warm during the cooler months, and ask questions on the Mitey Fresh Facebook page, other people may well be wondering the same thing, and I will do my best to answer them there.
